Southern Miss vs North Texas: What you need to know

It is homecoming week for the University of Southern Mississippi. Fresh off a bye week, Southern Miss (3-2, 1-0 C-USA) prepares to take on North Texas (2-3, 1-0) in an early season Conference USA West matchup.

The Golden Eagles will put their six-game home winning streak to test versus the Mean Green. Here's what you need to know.

The skinny
North Texas leads Southern Miss in the all-time series 7-6 dating back to Oct. 2, 1954 when North Texas defeated USM 15-7. Like USM, North Texas is coming off a bye week following its 46-25 loss to Houston.

The Mean Green finished the 2018 season 9-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Seth Littrell is in his fourth season as head coach for NTU.

Southern Miss and NTU have played each other in the last six seasons as conference opponents. The Mean Green have had the Golden Eagles' number, especially over the last three matchups going in favor of North Texas.

USM head coach Jay Hopson said Monday in his weekly press conference that North Texas is a team that his Golden Eagles really respect.

"We know this is a big conference game," Hopson said. "It is no surprise to us, we know they are a good football team and records do not mean anything."

Southern Miss is 60-22 all-time in homecoming games and has won 14 of its last 18.  Against North Texas in homecoming games, Southern Miss is 1-2. The Golden Eagles' last win versus the Mean Green for homecoming was in 1955 when USM shut out NTU 26-0.

Last meeting
The two teams last met a year ago almost to the day as Southern Miss lost 30-7 on the road versus North Texas. After the Mean Green took a 10-7 lead into the final minute of the third quarter, things fell apart for the Golden Eagles. NTU quarterback Mason Fine went on to throw for 292 yards and a touchdown while running back DeAndre Torrey rushed for three touchdowns in the contest.

Hopson said USM's missed scoring opportunities played a huge part in the Golden Eagles' loss last year, something that he aims to change in Saturday's game.

"We went inside the 25- and 30-yard line quite a few times and came away with nothing," Hopson said. "When you do that, you're not going to win football games. We have to sustain drives and then we have to put points on the board." We certainly understand that we have to play better this year than we did last year."

Scouting the Mean Green
North Texas brings a high-powered offense into Saturday's game, mainly behind two major players who contributed the most to its victory over USM a year ago in Fine and Torrey. The Mean Green sit near the top of the conference in all major offensive categories.

North Texas ranks second in Conference USA in scoring offense (33.0 points per game), first in total offense (451.4 ypg), fifth in rush offense (181.6 ypg) and fourth in pass offense (269.8).

Defensively, North Texas will be tasked with slowing down the Golden Eagles' dynamic offense, one that is heavily defined by the passing attack.

Currently, the Mean Green rank eighth in scoring defense (30.4 ppg), fifth in total defense (378.2 ypg), 10th in rush defense (189 ypg), fifth in pass defense (189.2) and third in pass defense efficiency.

Containing QB Mason Fine, NTU rushing attack
Fine, the 2019 C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, is no stranger to Southern Miss. After posting a 292-yard performance against USM's "Nasty Bunch" defense a season ago, the Peggs, Oklahoma native will look to lead the Mean Green to another win versus Southern Miss.

Fine enters the game as the nation's active leader in career passing yards (10,708), ranks fourth in the conference in passing yards with 1,290, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions, completing 62.4 percent of his passes.

"He throws the ball extremely well and he is a dual-threat guy," Hopson said. "We understand that we have a challenge this weekend."

As for Torrey, he leads the Mean Green in rushing yards with 214 on 41 carries, one touchdown and an average of 5.2 yards per carry. Torrey is also second for the Mean Green in all-purpose yards (439), averaging 87.8 per game.

Along with Torrey, running back Tre Siggers has rushed for 480 yards and four touchdowns on 64 carries, averaging 120 yards per game and 7.5 yards per carry (ranked No. 7 nationally)

Jack Abraham and USM offense
If Southern Miss plans to earn its second conference win of the season, it starts with the play of quarterback Jack Abraham.

Abraham, who leads the conference in passing yards (1,515) and pass efficiency (172.9), has thrown nine touchdowns and four interceptions through five games this season. Against the Mean Green in 2018, the Oxford native threw for more than 300 yards but only recorded one touchdown pass.

"He (Abraham) manages the offense well and he does not put them in bad situations," said North Texas head coach Seth Littrell. "He's very comfortable in getting the ball downfield to those receivers. They get in a lot of different formations, they're going to force you to be disciplined defensively making sure you understand where your alignment and assignment is."

However, to balance Abraham, the Golden Eagles must establish the running game early on. The play of running backs De'Michael Harris, Kevin Perkins, Steven Anderson and Darius Maberry will be key in allowing Abraham to be productive in the passing game.

Harris leads the team in rushing yards (176) and averages 4.5 per carry for a USM rushing attack that is 13th in the conference (107.6 ypg).

"De'Michael and KP are kind of a one-two punch," Hopson said. "When we have needed to run the ball, we have run the ball. We just have to keep doing that."

North Texas Mean Green

Offense

What more can be said here that hasn’t been mentioned in all the numerous articles about watchlists, record-breaking performances, and a revitalized North Texas football program?

In spite of a 2-3 record, the Mean Green come into this game 1-0 in conference and with high-flying performances from the offense. Even in their losses, UNT put up solid numbers against the likes of Cal and Houston, bookends to the thrashing they put on UTSA three weeks ago.

Through five games, Mason Fine has thrown for 11 touchdowns and 1,291 yards, leading the offense to average 33 points a game. Running back Tre Siggers, meanwhile, has been a gift, energizing the run game with 480 yards and four touchdowns over only four games (Siggers didn’t play in week one against FCS Abilene Christian).

After a humbling performance against Houston two weeks ago, and coming off a bye week, the Mean Green offense will be fine-tuned and ready to begin conference play in earnest this week.

Defense

The tape doesn’t lie, and in this case, the tape tells an interesting truth: Over five games, both the Mean Green and Southern Miss have allowed an average of 30.4 points per game.

But these teams are hardly evenly matched, as North Texas has defended both the pass and the run about evenly this season, giving up 189.2 yards in the air and 189 yards on the ground, over these five games. Despite the high number of points, the Mean Green defense hits hard and will show some of that aggressiveness against the Golden Eagles on Saturday.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Offense

Southern Miss has a lot to feel good about, coming into this game. Fresh from a bye week, the Golden Eagles have the better record (3-2 (1-0)), and a quarterback who has put up even bigger numbers than Mason Fine.

Jack Abraham, only a junior, has amassed 1,515 yards and nine touchdowns so far this season, despite the two losses coming from stiff SEC competition. In week three against Troy, Abraham threw for 463 yards in an offensive shoot-out, showing the Trojans (and the world) what Southern Miss is capable of when things go their way.

Challenging the Mean Green defense will be top wide receivers Jordan Mitchell (369 yards, three touchdowns on the season), Quez Watkins (27.5 YPC average), and Jaylond Adams (332 yards, two touchdowns), as the Golden Eagles will also attempt to punch up their running game, leading with De’Michael Harris (176 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries).

The Golden Eagles will have their work cut out for them, and they’ll need to score on both the ground and the air if they want to shut down the Mean Green, and compete for a C-USA West title.

Defense

The Southern Miss defense has been dominant against the run, giving up an average of only 123.2 yards a game this year. That might be enough to slow down UNT’s Siggers, but it’s the average of 267 yards given up in the air that might be a problem for this squad.

As the day wears on, and the players get tired, we’ll find out if those numbers are an accurate representation, or just inflated by having Bama on their schedule three weeks ago.

Summary

There’s a lot to love about this game. Two explosive quarterbacks, two strong defenses, and two head coaches who have had a few years now to fine-tune their squad, as previously recruited players graduate away, leaving room for the new blood.

The game being in USM’s house doesn’t hurt, but at the end of the day those “points allowed” by air will likely sink the Golden Eagles, as Mason Fine will take advantage of any and every opportunity to break out big plays. Jack Abraham is an incredible quarterback, and will deserve all of his post-season accolades, but North Texas is the more complete team by now, and since taking over at UNT, Seth Littrell has never lost to Southern Miss, winning by more points every year, over the last three years.

Final Score: North Texas 45, Southern Miss 28

Sacramento State vs. Fresno State: Game Preview, Prediction

The Fresno State Bulldogs weren’t quite able to close the deal against both USC and Minnesota, but the non-conference slate eases up considerably on Saturday night with a home date against the FCS Sacramento State Hornets.

In the early parts of this 2019 season, the Hornets have looked revitalized under first-year head coach Troy Taylor, suffering a 19-7 road loss at Arkansas that was closer than the final score would indicate before scoring seemingly at will against conference foe Northern Colorado last week. They look to be on the upswing, but the Bulldogs still have plenty of potential. And if they weren’t motivated to put together a big win before, you can guarantee they are now.

Here’s how the Bulldogs can score a victory over the Hornets.

Three Keys to a Fresno State Victory
1. Get the ground game going.

One early positive is that offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has found ways to get Ronnie Rivers a healthy amount of touches, but the running game has had its ups and downs in the early going. Jorge Reyna was the team’s leading rusher against USC, while Rivers himself has averaged 4.46 yards per carry. It’s fine, but he also has just two runs of 10 or more yards in 29 carries, so there’s room for improvement.

Additionally, head coach Jeff Tedford acknowledged this week that Josh Hokit would factor into the running game going forward, but the hype around the senior dual-sport athlete has always exceeded the production: In 229 career carries, he’s averaged a modest 4.2 YPC. If they want to take advantage of his bruising running style, it’ll probably be to raise the offense’s overall efficiency and create more favorable third-down situations and it’ll probably start to get sorted out in this game.

2. Show some improvements on third down.

One of the hallmarks of Jeff Tedford’s first two years at the helm was that they got better at moving the chains and keeping opponents from doing the same: From 2017 to 2018, the Bulldogs offense improved from 35.6% to 44.6% on third downs while the defense held strong at 34.8% and 34.1%.

So far this year, though, those same situations have been a significant problem: The defense has allowed 53.6% conversion rate while the offense has plummeted to 30.8%. In particular, defending third-and-short hasn’t gone well at all — opponents have converted 8-of-10 rushing attempts with three or fewer yards to go — and setting up third-and-manageable has been a problem on offense, since Reyna has had twice as many pass attempts with seven or more yards to go as he has with six or fewer.

3. Tighten up when defending the pass.

It’s tricky to say just how much of a step backwards the first two weeks have been for a secondary that had ranked among the Group of 5’s best last year, but there’s no question Sac State represents an opportunity to get back on the right foot. Against USC and Minnesota, for instance, the Bulldogs allowed 20 plays of 10-plus yards on 65 combined attempts, a 30.7% rate that’s up from 22.8% in 2018, but they also gave up just four passes of 20-plus yards (6.1%), which is more in line with what the Red Wave got accustomed to last fall (6.5%).

Obviously, the Hornets don’t have a Tyler Johnson or Michael Pittman in their ranks, but they’ve beaten up on inferior competition pretty convincingly thus far and quarterback Kevin Thomson has completed 65.3% of his throws and averaged 8.4 yards per attempt. Sophomore wide receiver Pierre Williams might be a player to watch if the secondary gets off to another slow start, as he’s averaged 19.2 yards and scored three touchdowns on 17 receptions.

Prediction

2019 hasn’t gone quite as planned for the Bulldogs so far but, even though the Hornets look much improved, they shouldn’t have any problem working out the kinks which have plagued them in the young season. Long story short, Sacramento State is going to feel the brunt of a lot of pent-up frustrations.

UTSA Roadrunners vs North Texas Mean Green Preview: Game Time, Betting Line, Prediction

UTSA Roadrunners Outlook - Jared Kalmus

The last two weeks have been tough for the Roadrunners, but understandably so. Baylor absolutely crushed UTSA in week two, while Army slowly suffocated the fight out of the Roadrunners in a game that was closer than the final score indicated. Both Baylor and Army are right on the bubble of the top 25 so UTSA shouldn’t take too much shame in losing to them. Rather, the experience should be a positive for a young team that’s still finding their identity. Even more importantly, UTSA has made it to week four without any notable injuries.

Rivalry outside, this week’s game provides a great opportunity for UTSA as it’s their first real measuring stick for the season. The Roadrunners enjoyed huge talent advantages over Incarnate Word, while Baylor and Army are lightyears ahead of UTSA. UNT is on pretty equal footing with UTSA so this is our first real chance to get a feel for how the Roadrunners will perform for the rest of their schedule.

UTSA quarterback Frank Harris has continued to play well in his first collegiate season, as he holds one of the highest completion percentages in the nation. Harris could be a problem for the Mean Green as UNT gave up 90 rushing yards (sacks removed) to Cal quarterback Chase Garbers last week. Harris is a much more explosive runner than Garbers so UNT will need to figure out a plan to spy Harris to keep him in the pocket.

Defensively the Roadrunners will look to lean on the strength of their defensive line. After graduating both of their starting offensive tackles, UNT has seen a drop off in both pass protection and run blocking from their offensive line. The Roadrunners’ defensive linemen should be full of confidence after beating up on Army in the trenches last week. The goal for UTSA will be to force Mason Fine into third and long attempts as the Mean Green have converted just 31% of their third down conversion attempts in the past two weeks.

North Texas Mean Green Outlook - Adam Woodyard

The last two weeks have been tough on the Mean Green as well, but for different reasons. Two weeks ago they were grounded by a suddenly well-rounded SMU team, and a week later held their own against the Pac-12’s Golden Bears, dropping a close one to, in theory, a better team than the Mustangs (current combined record of those two teams: 6-0).

It’s trickier to say whether this is UNT’s “first” measuring stick of the season, as Cal certainly dominated the first quarter of that game, but then only managed a field goal in quarters two through four. Cal is not exactly a prolific offense, but their defense was certainly strong enough that even with a new offensive coordinator on the sidelines, the Mean Green proved themselves to still be a dangerous team in 2019.

Mason Fine continues to do what he does, with his usual thrilling heroics but mixed results from the North Texas defense. A lot went wrong during the SMU game, but the team seemed to correct the following week, while allowing budding superstar Tre Siggers to motor down the field and do his thing. Provided everyone is healthy this week, Siggers should be even more impressive against UTSA.

Defensively North Texas seems on par with the Roadrunners, as both defenses have given up about a hundred points each, over their first three games. Unless some huge adjustment takes place on that side of the ball, this will just come down to which offense goes harder for four quarters.

Predictions

Jared - As I’m writing this we’ve yet to hear how many, if any, of the seven players that were injured against Cal will be playing for UNT this week. That could make a big difference but ultimately the Mean Green will be able to lean back on Mason Fine’s arm to bail them out. I think UTSA’s receivers will have an easier time getting open this week, giving the Roadrunners’ offense a little bit more breathing room. UTSA’s defensive line will pressure Fine all day but the Mean Green will hit on enough big plays to secure the win.

North Texas 33, UTSA 21

Adam - Considering how close this contest has been the last few years, the line legitimately surprised me. These games have been close, thrilling, and the largest margin of victory in series history was 14. Considering the improved offense under UTSA’s Frank Harris, this promises to be the same. I predict UTSA covers.

North Texas 27, UTSA 24
